An out of body experience is defined as an event in which the conscious self leaves the physical body.
Out of body experiences have been known to happen in dreams, in meditation, during a near death experience, and in a type of distance seeing done by psychics known as astral projection.
Out of body experiences have been studied extensively. Researchers have even found different methods of recreating out of body experiences in laboratories either by using optical headsets and cameras or by sending electrical signals to receptive parts of the brain. The phenomenon continues to raise debate in the scientific community concerning the connection between human consciousness and the body. Although out of body experiences are popular topics of discussion in psychology, philosophy and theology, the neurological causes behind it have yet to be fully understood or explained.
What is probably the most interesting fact about out of body experiences is that they are far more common than most people realize. About one in ten people claim to have had an out of body experience at least once in their lives. It can happen to anyone, including many people who once claimed to have been skeptics. Jane Seymour, Peter Sellers, Elizabeth Taylor and Donald Sutherland are noted celebrities who have experienced them during a near the death experience. Most people who have near death experiences claim that they literally rise out of and look down upon their bodies. Some people who have had them have even been able to give detailed descriptions of what was happening around them when they were otherwise supposedly unconscious.
You don’t have to be in a life or death situation though to have an out of body experience. Most of the people who experience them are usually in a relaxed state such as sleep or meditation. Sometimes, however, they have also been known to occur when the mind is being over stimulated such as when someone is traveling at very high speeds or rhythmically dancing to loud music.
Some psychics claim that they can have out of body experiences at will and travel and see things over time and distances. This ability is known as astral projection. What makes it particularly interesting is that many of these psychics can also remain fully conscious and aware of their surroundings throughout the process.
Some believe that astral projection can be learned through psychic meditation and practice. One of the most noted proponents of this belief was an author and researcher named of Robert Monroe. If you are interested in trying to learn it yourself you can either ready one of his books or take an actual course at The Monroe Institute.
